Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired yet?

Do you need more time after detox to rebuild a sober life?

What Would You Like to Know?

After detox I arrived on Enders overwhelmed and angry. Mostly I was scared. I thought it was the end, but it wasn't. I finished high school, got into college. Now I've got a great family and a great job. It's still a total shock.

In Recovery Ten Years

Quick Introduction

Let's introduce you to our Island and our President.

Father Tom's Invitation to You

Fr Tom Hoar, SSE, has been 34 years sober, and that's why he hosts a recovery residence within the community.

What's Enders Island Like?

Here's a quick tour of Enders Island, with its natural beauty, music, art, and prayerful life.

I landed on Enders in the middle of Christmas because my sister kicked me out. All that holiday cheer almost put me over the edge and I acted like a jerk. The day I got to Enders was the worst day of my life. I never imagined things could turn around.

Great Outcomes

Enders Island has demonstrated over the past 30 years an ability to help people maintain sobriety. Our best metric are happy endings in the personal stories of our residents.

I spent years drinking. Nobody could stand me. Even me. I would do detox then relapse over and over. By the time my parents told me about Enders I was homeless. I learned a lot from the guys and staff. Now I have the sobriety I never dared to dream was possible.

The Spirituality of St. Edmund's Retreat on Enders Island

St. Edmund of Canterbury was a scholar and, as a contemplative introvert, a reluctant but well-known preacher who promoted social justice and pastoral care for all people.

On Enders Island, you live with other recovery residents within a larger Catholic community which follows the spirituality of St. Edmund and where people, including the President, have been getting and staying sober for 30 years.

The Spirituality of St. Edmund in Action

You will live among people -- ordained and not ordained -- who are dedicated to the spirituality of St. Edmund, to social justice, and to pastoral care for all, including the following examples.

Recovery & Renewal

On Enders Island (Connecticut), there is a vibrant community providing a setting conducive to recovery and renewal for residents, retreat-goers, and many volunteers and visitors.

Compassion for Others

In Selma (Alabama), there is one of the largest social entrepreneur programs that serves to relieve urban blight. Limited internships for residents are available.

Higher Education

In Burlington (Vermont), there is St. Michael's College, with over 40 majors and a strong program in student internships and opportunities for real-world experience.

What Would You Like to Know?

I had my doubts about living with religious people, but it turned out that everyone was committed to the 12 Steps, which are all about turning everything over to God. I had to learn to pray to stay sober. There were a lot of ways and places to pray there.

Safeguarding Excellence

St. Edmund's Retreat is in compliance with the highest standards of policies and procedures ever created to safeguard minors and vulnerable adults as instituted by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. St. Edmund's Retreat has voluntarily decided to deepen its safeguarding commitment through a rigorous process of intensive review and improvement led by the world-renowned Praesidium, whose research-based criteria are used to accredit organizations in safeguarding across industries, for-profit and nonprofit, secular and religious, worldwide.

Being on an island had a way of helping me focus where I needed to focus on - developing a conscious connection with the God of my understanding so I didn't have to try to remain sober on my own.

It was different than other places. There were a lot of options, a lot of support, but it was all up to me. I had to do the work and I had to choose to take advantage of what was there, just like now in my own life. It's all up to me. I learned how to get sober and be independent.
